Over the past couple of weeks, apprentices Lewis, Aaron, Dean, Jacob and Josh, along with their tutor Bryan, have been out supporting a local tree planting project in Mosser, Cockermouth 🌱
Working across 17 hectares, they’ve been helping care for trees in their first year of growth — checking how they’re doing, replacing any that haven’t survived, putting guards back in place and clearing weeds to give them the best chance to grow.
The aim is to create a wood pasture system, providing shelter for livestock while also boosting biodiversity. As the trees establish, they’ll create habitats for wildlife and provide pollen, nectar, fruits and nuts throughout the year.
It’s hands-on work that really makes a difference to the success of projects like this — and a great effort from everyone involved, especially in some challenging weather!
Thanks to Askhill Farm for having us, and to Lochlan Dulson from People Plant Trees for helping us to organise this initiative.👏
